In the article “Building Sustainable High-Growth Startup Companies” the authors examine a set of arguments where the claims are opposed to each other on an issue. The authors ask “Are management systems positively associated with growth or do they constrain it?” As maintained by the authors, management systems are technically defined in the literature as: “formal, information-based routines and procedures managers use to maintain or alter patterns in organizational activities”. To my way of thinking, sometimes two things can be true together although they seem to contradict each other on the surface. Nothing is ever all one thing and depending on what stage the business is in, management systems can be a great benefit or it can be harmful to the company.
As I see it, management systems are positively associated with growth. It is the most important decision a company that’s moved beyond the growth stage could make. A manager should know which stage their business is in and the steps to take for growth. Each stage of growth in business is paramount because businesses are known to face different challenges at each stage such as an entrepreneurial crisis. Entrepreneurial crisis means it is an event, or a series of events, that causes major disturbance for a business.
For instance, Wells Fargo paid 3 billion to settle a lawsuit because in order to meet sales quotas, Wells Fargo’s employees illegally opened millions of fake customer accounts without the customers’ consent. Employees falsified signatures and created fake records that resulted in billions of dollars in revenue. This is when a management system would be a big help. Management systems align the company strategy and annual objectives with daily actions, monitor progress and prompt corrective actions. It’s how things get done when they need to get done, or not.
On the other hand, I do realize the management system is not everyone’s cup of tea and find that it takes away from what made the company successful in the first place. However, without a management system it is like operating without a sense of purpose nor direction. Moreover, it is like fixing symptoms of problems without getting at root causes, and you know that in the end the issues will come back. All-in-all, management systems are positively associated with growth because most of the important decisions are made by them. The benefit is the manager is getting much needed help with strategic planning, necessary improvements, creating and maintaining a space for change, meeting and exceeding customer expectations, enhancing performance and gaining competitive advantage. Management systems are used by hundreds of organizations to grow successfully and profitably.
