The requirement is for an “Equality Audit” which should take place at an organisation of your choosing. The purpose of this assignment is to enable students to demonstrate understanding of equality and diversity initiatives in theory and in application in an organisational setting. The Assignment is as follows: The assignment is a critical assessment of your organisation with regard to its equality and diversity approach and policies, and discusses these in relation to the appropriate literature on equality and diversity policy. Most of the relevant readings appear under topics 4 – 6 but may also appear elsewhere. 1. Using Kirton and Greene’s Exhibit 8.3 (Type of Equality and Diversity Organisation) explain which type, if any, your organisation fits within the framework outlined, i.e.The Minimalist/Partial Organisation; The Compliant Organisation or The Comprehensive Proactive Organisation. You may find that the organisation does not “fit” ideally into one or other, as there may be overlap, as the organisation may have characteristics from more than one type. Explain clearly the rationale for your description and conclusion. This is a minor part of the assignment and will probably account for 3 pages. 2. Drawing upon and incorporating the literature on equality/diversity policy, and the specific policy examples, conduct an equality “audit” within the organisation which – for example – describes and analyses: a) The distribution of staff in the various levels and occupations within the organisation (approximate) in terms of gender, race/nationality, disability etc. b) The specific policies and procedures in place with regard to equality and diversity initiatives. c) Discuss issues with regard to implementation of equality/diversity policies, including any “intangible” elements and challenges (e.g. organisational culture; management commitment). d) Summarise your audit and critically analyse the organisation’s success overall in promoting equality and diversity including any recommended actions. Make reference back to Kirton and Greene’s typology if appropriate. e) Explain briefly how you did your research, e.g. company documents analysed/any interviews held with key staff etc. f) Include a full bibliography of all authors referred to in the books, journal articles or other material. g) You may include no more than 6 pages of appendix material related to the organisation (e.g. company organisational charts; company documents) if required. These are examples of the types of issues which can be researched in your assignment, and the above does not represent a “template” on how to conduct the audit. The appropriate issues should be decided upon and then organised and integrated in your literature. The assignment is threefold; Part 1 is a short analysis of your organisation with reference to Kirton and Greene’s typology. This is about the broad approach to equality and diversity adopted such as its public statements and general approach. The second part requires you to draw upon and refer to the variety of examples of equality/diversity policies in the literature, using these to conduct an audit of the organisation’s policies in equality/diversity. This requires you to explain which policies the company has in place in terms of procedures, positive action policies, training, harassment policies, terms and conditions and so on. However you must go beyond merely describing what it is in place, and critically discuss its actions, policies and so on in the light of the academic material. By way of example:– Collinson et al. (1990) and Jewson and Mason (1986) acknowledge that having “paper” policies and “bureaucratic measures” to promote equality, are insufficient to counter decades of discrimination; or that employees and employers often have different expectations in respect of outcomes. Are you aware of any such issues in your organisation, or whether the organisation has tried to counteract them? The third part of the assignment which should be no more than 500 words should summaries each group member’s contribution and their role in the assignment. Assignment Specification: The total maximum word limit for this assignment is 4500 words ( /- 10%), excluding references, any appendices, and bibliography. The written assignment must be typed, be well presented and written in an academic style with appropriate headings (introduction, main body, conclusion, bibliography). Please ensure you pay sufficient attention to the introduction and conclusion (they should each be approximately 10% of the word count for the assignment), 10 References (havard style). 12 Font Size, Times New Roman or Arial, 1.5 line spacing. Pages must be numbered.
